PTO automates 10 patent forms in Adobe PDF

The Patent and Trademark Office has made its 10 most commonly used forms downloadable in fillable Adobe Portable Document Format.

The new forms meet Section 508 accessibility requirements, said Fred A. Silverberg, senior legal adviser in PTO's Office of Patent Legal Administration. They are used for utility and design patents and patent reissuance, legal adviser Jeanne Clark said.

To view, complete and print the fillable PDF forms, users must have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or a later version. And they must still submit hard copies to PTO. Those who want to save the completed PDF forms on their hard drives have to purchase the full version of Adobe Acrobat 5.0, which costs about $250.

PTO eventually will create fillable PDF versions of all its patent forms, Clark said. Although it isn't tracking the number of fillable forms users, the agency has received 'lots of positive comments' at, she said.
