Sandia models predict effects of water policies

Using off-the-shelf simulation software, researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have developed computer models to predict the effects of water policy decisions far into the future.

Sandia built its Dynamic Water Budget models with Powersim Studio from Powersim Corp. of Reston, Va. Although designed for business applications, the software can model 'anything that flows, moves or changes over time,' Sandia hydrologist Dick Thomas said.

Powersim Studio runs under Microsoft Windows 98, NT, 2000 or XP and requires 64M of RAM. Although the Sandia team used the developer version, users of the water models need only a PC with a run-time version of Powersim.

The models take into account such factors as water consumption, population growth, and the balance between domestic, industrial and agricultural use. By changing data inputs, researchers can view long-term effects of water management policy decisions.
