NFC reissues thousands of W-2s

The Agriculture Department's National Finance Center in New Orleans had to reissue tens of thousands of W-2 statements earlier this year because of a software coding change that miscalculated individuals' incomes.

'It was a confluence of technology and quality assurance problems,' center director John R. Ortego said.

An integrated payroll processing system at the center handles payroll records for a half-million government workers, 20 percent of whom received erroneous W-2 forms in January.

One module of the system that calculates state taxes did not add up the numbers correctly, Ortego said. The center formed a special team to correct the problem, which was detected Jan. 15. Corrected W-2s went out to 80 percent of the employees by Jan. 31 and the remaining forms were sent in February.

Ortego said the special team will continue working to ensure that such mistakes are not repeated.

'To my customers, I apologize,' he said.
