Coding error hits W-2s at USDA center

The Agriculture Department's National Finance Center in New Orleans had to reissue tens of thousands of W-2 statements earlier this year because a software coding change miscalculated individuals' incomes.

'It was a confluence of technology and quality assurance problems,' center director John R. Ortego said.

An integrated payroll processing system at NFC handles payroll records for a half-million government workers, 20 percent of whom got erroneous W-2 forms in January.

One system module that calculates state taxes did not add the numbers correctly, Ortego said. The problem was detected Jan. 15.

Federal employees with questions can call the center's hotline at 504-255-5360.
