Cobalt Qube 3: little big server

Sun Microsystems Inc.'s compact Cobalt Qube 3 server appliance is sized for small offices but can handle 250 to 300 users, said Peder Ulander, the division's marketing director.

The box has a 450-MHz K6-II processor from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., and up to 512M of RAM. It can accommodate either a single 40G internal drive or two 40G drives at RAID Level 1, Ulander said.

The Qube 3's open-source Linux operating system is optimized for data throughput and delivery of Web services, Ulander said. When the unit is first switched on, it checks to see if it is already connected to a live network. If not, it launches a wizard to guide the administrator through the setup. Other preinstalled wizards help configure PCs and notebook computers, establish workgroups and e-mail accounts, and enable public and private file sharing.

Qube 3 users who have virtual private networks can implement either the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol or Internet Protocol Security, Ulander said.

The Qube 3 lists for $1,149.
