Verizon gets MAA crossover for Baltimore

The General Services Administration has modified a Metropolitan Area Acquisition contract held by Verizon Communications Inc. of New York to add local telephone service for federal agencies in Baltimore.

This is the latest contract modification intended to open federal telecommunications contracts to greater competition. Winstar Communications Inc. of New York has held the Baltimore MAA contract since March 2000.

GSA's Federal Technology Service has competitive MAA contracts in place for local phone service in 23 cities. Competitors can apply to operate in a MAA city one year after its contract award. They also can cross over between the MAA local program and the FTS 2001 long-distance program.

Verizon received an MAA contract for Norfolk, Va., in January. The contract modifications permit analog and Integrated Services Digital Network circuit-switched voice and data offerings plus dedicated transmission service in Baltimore.
