Dell, EMC improve storage management software lines
Two large storage hardware makers, Dell Computer Corp. and EMC Corp. of Hopkinton, Mass., have upgraded their joint storage management software offerings.
The applications help administrators of Dell PowerEdge and Unix servers consolidate their storage subsystems, said Frank Frankovsky, a Dell senior manager. He said remote storage management has become an important part of disaster recovery planning.
Dell-EMC ControlCenter Navisphere 6.0 now can manage storage area networks remotely through a browser. It uses Secure Sockets Layer encryption and audit logging, Frankovsky said.
Dell-EMC SnapView and MirrorView applications create mirrors of production data. SnapView 1.3 makes multiple snapshots of a single data set'incrementally or up to eight snapshots simultaneously. For example, the administrator could schedule a snapshot once an hour during the day.
MirrorView 1.3 can now do long-distance mirroring for off-site backup, Frankovsky said. The software can mirror one to four primary sites to a single secondary site, or it can mirror one data source to two off-site target sites.
A fully redundant 2T SAN with disaster recovery and the Dell-EMC software enhancements would cost about 10 cents per megabyte, Dell officials said. The new software for a 2T SAN lists for $28,500.
