State team names 'Beetle Bailey' character

Chip Gizmo, IT tech

A group of State department IT specialists have put a name to the face of the newest character in the 'Beetle Bailey' comic strip. The computer technician, Chip Gizmo, will be introduced to the strip on July 4. The name was chosen from some 84,000 submissions.

Beetle Bailey cartoonist Mort Walker and Secretary of State Colin Powell announced the winning name at State yesterday.

The winners, Earl Hemminger, Melinda Isachsen, Bob King and Ken Hill came up with the name after Walker launched his 'Name the IT character' contest at the FOSE 2002 show in March.

The contest, sponsored by Dell Computer Corp., raised more than $100,000 for the Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides housing for families of patients at military and veterans hospitals.
