A Defense Department testing team has approved the latest release of Defense Message System software for general service. But testers found DMS Version 3.0 unsuitable for intelligence work'the area for which its security features were designed.

After the Joint Interoperability Test Command cleared DMS 3.0 last month, Defense OKed it for worldwide deployment beginning this summer, DMS program manager Jerry Bennis said.

'JITC reported that DMS 3.0 performed far better in this test than it has in any prior test,' Bennis said. He would not comment on why DMS 3.0 will not be deployed to intelligence agencies.
