Thirty-year-old Chip Gizmo will be the new computer technician at what is arguably the most famous Army base, Camp Swampy.

After nearly three months of deliberation, 'Beetle Bailey' cartoonist Mort Walker last week announced the name of his strip's new IT character during a briefing at the State Department.

Secretary of State Colin Powell led the cheers for Earl Hemminger, Melinda Isachsen, Robert King and Kenneth Hill, the four IT specialists at State who came up with the chosen name after Walker in March announced his 'Name the IT character' contest at the FOSE trade show.

Walker received more than 84,000 submissions. The contest, sponsored by Dell Computer Corp., raised more than $100,000 for the Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit that provides housing for families of patients at military and veterans hospitals.
