New low-power, green-design PC doesn't have fan

The NEC PowerMate eco uses less electricity and contains fewer toxic substances than most other desktop systems, touts maker NEC Solutions America Inc.

Larry Miller, vice president and general manager of the Sacramento, Calif., company's mobile solutions group, said the PowerMate eco complies with last year's executive order that standby power consumption should not exceed 1 watt.

The eco comes outfitted with a 900-MHz Crusoe processor from Transmeta Corp. of Santa Clara, Calif., designed for power conservation in notebook PCs, Miller said.

A PowerMate eco is $1,599 with 256M of memory expandable to 640M, 20G hard drive and CD-ROM drive.
