Navy awards R&D contract for network

The Naval Research Laboratory has awarded a five-year, $29 million R&D contract for its Advanced Technology Demonstration Network.

The federal systems subsidiary of Firstwave Secure Intelligent Optical Networks Inc. of Reston, Va., will add to ATDnet its network management tools and SIOS family of optical switches.

Firstwave makes all-optical switching and dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing transport products. The all-optical overlays can push protocol processing to the network edge, which speeds up optical processing at the core.

ATDnet so far is carrying OC-48 and OC-192 Synchronous Optical Network traffic, 2.5-Gbps asynchronous transfer mode traffic and 1.6-Gbps high-definition TV signals.
