FTC unshells its Net safety symbol

Dewie the Turtle, an advocate of safe Internet practices, last month joined Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl among the government's menagerie of mascots.

The Federal Trade Commission unveiled Dewie at the Privacy2002 Conference in Cleveland.
'The idea is to have Internet security practices become second nature'just like looking both ways before crossing the street,' FTC commissioner Orson Swindle said.

Dewie has his own Web site at www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/infosecurity/index.html.

It provides information on topics such as firewalls, antivirus software, spam, secure online shopping and online privacy for children.
