Control, alt, hands up! The federal Bureau of Justice Statistics has reported that police departments in the 62 largest U.S. cities have dramatically increased their use of computers.

The proportion of departments using computers in the field rose from 73 percent to 92 percent between 1990 and 2000. Police departments likewise called on the FBI's Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System more often. IAFIS spread from 60 percent to 97 percent of departments during the decade.

The share of departments adopting computerized 911 systems to pinpoint incidents increased from 76 percent to 97 percent. And by 2000, all 62 departments had computer-aided dispatch systems, up from 90 percent in 1990.
