IT unity. The Navy's road map of the future is guiding it toward integrating information systems and testing new technologies to push them faster to the fleets, said Vice Adm. Richard W. Mayo, commander of the Naval Network Warfare Command in Norfolk, Va.

'It's an effort where we align, organize, integrate and transform the Navy to a capabilities-based force,' Mayo said last month at the 2002 Military Communications Conference in Anaheim, Calif.
The IT component that unifies the plan, known as Sea Power 21, is FORCEnet, the Navy's architecture for integrating IT systems. FORCEnet represents the networks, sensors and communications needed to give the Navy a global reach, Mayo said.

'This is our future,' Mayo said. 'We are going to get to one naval network, afloat and ashore.'

Enterprise biometrics. The Defense Department has formed a decision-making group to guide development of the Biometrics Enterprise Solution, DOD's authentication architecture. The Biometrics Senior Coordinating Group held its first meeting last month. Army deputy CIO David Borland chairs the group, whose members discussed DOD's goal to deploy biometrics departmentwide and to embed biometric identifiers on every Common Access Card by 2005.

The group will vote on facets of the department's enterprise architecture, acting on suggestions from the existing Biometrics Enterprise Solution working groups of military and civilian DOD agency officials.

The working groups study biometrics policy and aspects such as economic analysis, requirements, legal architecture, acquisition, collection, storage, access and retrieval.
