GCN, Washington Technology receive Neal honors

Government Computer News and Washington Technology, two newspapers published by Post Newsweek Tech Media, were honored as finalists in a national business journalism contest yesterday.

The Jesse H. Neal award certificates were presented by American Business Media, a New York industry association for business-to-business information providers, including magazines, Web sites and trade shows.

GCN was a finalist for 'best single issue' for its Feb. 18, 2002, edition, which included coverage of federal government IT budget proposals and a management report on systems modernization efforts.

Washington Technology was a finalist for 'best single article' in the category for publications with $3 million to $7 million in annual revenue for its Oct. 21, 2002, reporting on 'Network-Centric Warfare' and new defense opportunities.

The awards 'attest to the enthusiasm and talent of our editorial and art people, and to the climate of excellence and continuous improvement at Post Newsweek,' Thomas R. Temin, executive editor and senior vice president, said in a memo to staff members this morning.

This year's contest brought 1,093 entries from business publications across the country. The award is named for the first managing director of what is now ABM.

Post Newsweek Tech Media is a unit of Post-Newsweek Media, a division of The Washington Post Co. which also includes the FOSE trade show.

Winners of the 49th annual awards were announced at a luncheon in New York City attended by nearly 500 editors, publishers and media executives. CIO magazine received the top prize, the Grand Neal.

Ophthalmology Times, an Advanstar publication, won the Neal for best single issue.

Photo District News from VNU Business Media won for best article in the $3 million to $7 million revenue range.
