Linux available from SuSE for 64-bit Itanium 2

SuSE Inc. has released a 64-bit version of Linux for the Intel Itanium 2 platform.

The distribution, called SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8, can run on systems with up to 64 Itanium 2 processors and 64M of memory, said Holger Dyroff, North American general manager for the Oakland, Calif., company.

SuSE, a division of SuSE Linux AG of Germany, previously offered a Linux distribution for the first-generation Itanium chip. The original Itanium, released two years ago, faced slow sales as vendors and customers awaited Itanium 2.

'Itanium 2 is definitely a platform for the enterprise, which will be more widely accepted in the enterprise than the first Itanium was,' Dyroff said.

SuSE also announced that it has struck a deal with the partner centers of the TeraGrid project to deploy Enterprise Server 8 on several IBM Corp. clusters. The partner centers include the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, San Diego Supercomputing Center, Energy Department's Argonne National Laboratory, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and California Institute of Technology.

SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8's main competition is Red Hat Linux Advanced Server for the Itanium Processor from Red Hat Inc. of Raleigh, N.C.

Red Hat makes a version of Linux for workstations that use Itanium 2 processors, and Dyroff said that SuSE will do the same 'as soon as it makes sense for us commercially.' In the meantime, Enterprise Server 8 could run on Itanium 2 workstations, he said.

SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 has a price of $1,449, which includes one year of security updates and patch delivery.
