The armed forces honor their fallen members, partly to provide solace to survivors. The Pentagon provides services known as military honors in most situations, as mandated by law and tradition. Information about these activities is available on the Web at dod.mil/mapcentral/casualty.html.

The site has links to Defense Department resources on funerals and cemeteries, support for grieving families, and assistance for missing service members and prisoners of war.

The Military Honors section at supplies information on how survivors and funeral directors can arrange for special services, including flag folding, flag presentation and the playing of 'Taps.'

Under law, honor guard details consist of at least two uniformed service members, one from the deceased service member's home service. The Veterans Affairs Department provides headstones and markers for some cemeteries, with information available at www.cem.va.gov/hmorder.htm.
