As the Iraq war reaches its final stages, the U.S. government is focusing its efforts on rebuilding Iraq's economy and providing the institutional underpinnings for a functioning democracy.

The State Department's Agency for International Development has begun to issue contracts for educational programs and food aid for Iraq, and has launched a site at www.usaid.gov/iraq to issue updates on the process. According to AID, the agency has assembled and trained the largest-ever U.S. humanitarian rapid-response team and has positioned stockpiles of emergency supplies and commodities, among other steps.

Visitors to AID's Iraq site can sign up for e-mail news on the rebuilding program, find out how to support humanitarian organizations, and see relief and reconstruction activities. The agency updates the site daily with information on the Iraq rebuilding program.
