OMB, OPM ISO expert project managers in IT

The Office of Management and Budget and Office of Personnel Management are drafting a policy that would require agency systems project managers to hold commercial certification or show long-time professional success running IT projects.

An OMB official said the policy is a first attempt at setting job criteria for systems project managers. OPM likely will issue the formal policy, but no deadline has been set.

The guidance will mandate that employees be certified by the Project Management Institute or a similar commercially accredited program, or be required to demonstrate that they were within 10 percent of cost, schedule and performance goals on IT projects they ran.
