OMB reaches out to Silicon Valley for help

Norman Lorentz

The federal government welcomes technology from Silicon Valley and plans to strengthen its ties with the California computer Mecca, according to Norman Lorentz, chief technology officer of the Office of Management and Budget.

Lorentz said the goal of a press conference held last week at the headquarters of electronics trade group AeA in Santa Clara, Calif., was 'to create a bridge between Silicon Valley and inside the Beltway. We plan on coming out here on a recurring basis. We need the best and brightest to help us out.'

Lorentz said OMB plans to create repositories or directories of systems that are mutually interoperable, and to encourage agencies to use those products by channeling funds to agency programs that use them.

'We are planning to create a rliable method of assessing emerging technologies,' Lorentz said, emphasizing that both large and small vendors will be welcome to participate in development of new technology for the government.
