Navy appoints IT officer

Steven Ehrler can drop the word 'acting' from his title; he was recently named Navy program executive officer for IT.

John J. Young Jr., assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, signed off on the appointment earlier this month. Ehrler had been acting PEO-IT since Joseph Cipriano retired from the post last fall to go work for Lockheed Martin Corp.'s IT division in Seabrook, Md.

Ehrler has worked numerous jobs in the Navy. He recently represented the Navy's acquisition division in the Defense Department's Office of the Space Architect. In 1999, he took over as technical director for Navy PEO-IT and offered acquisition and technical guidance for the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet program.

From 1976 to 1983, he was a nuclear submarine officer. He has worked as an electrical officer, communications officer and weapons department head. He also worked as special assistant for advanced space systems for the Navy PEO for space, communications and sensors.

The PEO-IT office, based in Arlington, Va., is responsible for acquiring nontactical IT systems and services that are used to support Navy and Marine Corps personnel.
