NNSA ordered to fix security at Energy labs

Energy secretary Spencer Abraham has told the National Nuclear Security Administration to overhaul security procedures at the department's nuclear laboratories.

Abraham's order followed last month's release of a General Accounting Office report criticizing NNSA's management of physical security at three labs and four other Energy sites.

The 3-year-old NNSA is still defining roles and responsibilities for safeguarding the weapons labs and managing contractors, GAO officials said in the report.

Over the past six months, Los Alamos National Lab security lapses'such as missing notebook and desktop computers'drove Energy to put the lab's management contract out to bid for the first time in 60 years.
