Army, Reserve CIOs merge

Army and Army Reserve systems brass met last month to sign a memorandum that calls for integrating the Reserve's CIO staff into the Army CIO organization.

The move'prompted by the service's effort to better align its IT operations'follows the Army's plan to integrate Army Reserve and active Guard-Reserve soldiers into key leadership positions, according to the memo.

Several Reserve officers have already moved to the Army CIO office, and plans call for 10 to make the switch, officials said.

CIO personnel maintain 'a single, integrated, fused network operation within the Army,' said Lt. Gen. Peter M. Cuviello, who early this month retired from his post as Army CIO.

Getting together

Lt. Gen. James R. Helmly, chief of the Army Reserve, said the move to consolidate offices reinforces a key tenet of the Army's transformation initiative. The service does not plan to stop with the joined CIO office, he said.

On Oct. 1, the Army will integrate the Army Reserve Personnel Command with the Total Army Personnel Command, Helmly said.

'We're putting our money where our mouth is,' he said. 'We're walking the walk as well as talking the talk in Army transformation.'

Cuviello, who pushed the merger as one of his last acts as CIO, said the move would bring down the divisions between Army personnel that have existed for decades.

'We are not the Army of the Reserve or the Army of the Guard, we are one Army,' Cuviello said. 'This framework that we have says we agree to work together to make this thing happen.'

Cuviello said the Army also is discussing folding the Army National Guard CIO office into the servicewide office.
