Army makes global Overture

The Army Band will broadcast its annual Overture "1812" Concert globally tonight for the first time via webcast.

The free concert, held at 8 p.m. on the Northwest corner of the Washington Monument grounds, will be accessible from the band's Web site.

The concert includes traditional songs ranging from 'God Bless America' and 'America the Beautiful' to 'Grand Old Flag.' The event ends with the band performing Tchaikovsky's '1812 Overture' complete with live cannon fire by the Presidential Salute Battery of the 3rd U.S. Infantry.

'For the first time, people will be able to log on and hear the Army band in concert live, as it is happening, via the Internet, from anywhere in the world,' Staff Sgt. Thomas Bratten, webmaster for the Army Band site, said in a statement.

Bratten said this is only the start of what he expects to be many more live band webcasts. To view the performance online, listeners need an Internet connection with at least a 56-Kbps modem and QuickTime Player Version 6.
