Army details results of systems integration efforts

The Army has reduced servers by 30 percent, slashed applications by 50 percent, begun work on an Army systems integration plan and created a deputy for Army logistics enterprise integration.

These are a sample of the results that are the fallout from four memos released earlier this year to help Army officials get a better grip on the service's IT infrastructure, said David Borland, deputy CIO. He spoke today at a breakfast sponsored by Federal Sources Inc. of McLean, Va.

The knowledge management memos set goals and directions for accelerating server consolidation, and consolidating systems around the Army Knowledge Online portal, which now has 1.47 million registered users.

'We said what are the things we need to emphasize? What do we need to get at in order to make the IT capabilities in the Army support the Army that exists today and the Army in the future'the transformed Army?' Borland said.

One of the four memos established AKO as the enterprise portal and set the tone for a knowledge-based organization, he said. Another set an Oct. 1 deadline for the reduction of servers and apps. Borland said both objectives were met, although he didn't have figures on the number of apps or servers the Army had prior to the memo.

The third memo outlined migration plans for all Army personnel systems to move to the Defense Integrated Military Human Resource System by October of next year. And the final memo detailed the priorities for achieving a seamless, end-to-end logistics enterprise.
