DOD recruits workers online for southwest Asia

The Defense Department has launched a Web site to recruit contract civilian workers to assist in rebuilding Iraq and Afghanistan.

The site, Supporting Our Friends in Iraq and Afghanistan, made its debut yesterday. SOFIA posts several types of jobs for civil engineers, computer specialists, computer security experts, general engineers, protocol specialists, contracting officers and interpreters.

DOD will hire individuals for a 12-month period with the option to extend employment. They must be willing to live in field conditions, initially alongside military personnel, but they might eventually work by themselves, the department said in a release.

Applicants who are interested in any of the 23 current positions listed under the Available Opportunities link can submit an electronic resume to the site, using the Resumix Resume Builder tool. Resumes will be stored in the Army's centralized Resumix database. Applicants also can track the status of their resumes on the site.
