consolidates info on defects

For the holiday gift-buying season, six agencies connected their lists of consumer-product recalls into a single Web portal.

'We're calling a one-stop shop for consumers,' said Elaine Tyrrell, outreach programs director for the Consumer Product Safety Commission. She said CPSC's hotline had received growing numbers of calls about products the commission does not regulate.

The site lists not only defective household items over which CPSC has jurisdiction but also recalled motor vehicles, boats, food, medicines, cosmetics and pesticides.

CPSC has owned the URL for some time but had not used it until now.

CPSC's partners are responsible for updating their own recall lists. They are the Coast Guard, Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, Food Safety Inspection Service and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The General Services Administration team that manages the FirstGov portal operates the recalls site in conjunction with the CPSC webmaster.
