CMS extends EDS Medicare system maintenance contract

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services extended by two years its Medicare system maintenance contract with EDS Corp., which includes moving all Medicare Part B claims processing onto a standard platform. CMS is an agency of the Health and Human Services Department.

The Medicare Part B Standard System Consolidation Contract was originally awarded to EDS in 1997 and now extends through 2005, the company said.

EDS is migrating Medicare carriers from the other five Medicare medical claims systems to the EDS MCS system as part of CMS' Medicare IT Modernization and Contractor Reform program. Four of those systems are now retired, and the last standard system and the remaining Part B workloads will be moved to the MCS platform by August 2005.

About 78 percent of all Medicare Part B claims, except those for durable medical equipment, are processed through EDS' MCS system.
