McFarland sworn in as Veterans CIO

Robert McFarland, a former Dell Inc. executive, officially became the Veterans Affairs Department's assistant secretary for information technology today. Deputy CIO Edward Meagher had been acting in the post since John Gauss resigned in June.

"McFarland brings extensive experience in leading large organizations
and has a proven record of success," VA secretary Anthony Principi said.
As both assistant secretary and CIO, McFarland becomes the principal adviser to Principi on IT management.

Before coming to VA, McFarland served as Dell's vice president of government
relations. He also had managed the military, federal, state and local government business as vice president and general manager of the government sector.

An Army Vietnam veteran, McFarland holds a bachelor's degree in business
management from LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas.
