VOIP system gets promise of Defense's OK

The Joint Interoperability Test Command has certified the first voice over IP system for Defense Department use, clearing the way for deploying VOIP over the Defense Switched Network.

JITC has sent Nortel Networks Corp. a letter of the command's intent to certify the Brampton, Ontario, company's system for interoperability. The company also is awaiting confirmation that it has passed information assurance requirements.

Certification for interoperability and information assurance is required for any products that connect with the Defense Switched Network. Testing ensures products work as intended in a multivendor environment and provide required security features.

The platform approved by JITC includes Nortel's Succession 1000M communications server, BayStack 460 24-T Power Over Ethernet Switch, Contivity Secure IP Services Gateway and Passport 8600 Routing Switch.

The DOD configuration includes unique command and control features not available in commercial versions, including the ability to pre-empt other traffic on a congested IP network, said Mara Foulois, a Nortel senior account manager.

'These are controlled releases when it comes to unique military features,' she said.

Several DOD customers, Foulois said, have been awaiting the certification to begin implementation of VOIP. VOIP can offer financial savings by combining voice and data on a single network, as well as increased functionality.
