Database will track Guard employment information

The Defense Department has unveiled a database that will help Defense leaders keep track of who employs the 1.2 million members of the National Guard and Reserve forces.
The Civilian Employment Information Program is the product of a yearlong effort to gather information on the civilian employers of National Guard members and reservists. DOD hopes the system will give military brass a better idea of who to call up for active duty.
The Army and Air National guards, Air Force and Coast Guard Reserve and Navy Individual Ready Reserve are required to enter their employer data on the new Defense Manpower Data Center Web site
Members of the Army and Marine Reserve and Navy Selected Reserve must enter their employment data on existing personnel reporting systems, according to David Chu, undersecretary of Defense for personnel and readiness.
Chu said collecting the information will help DOD comply with legal requirements for calling up service members to active duty. DOD is required to:
- Consider whether the civilian workers are needed to maintain national health and safety
- Ensure that the military does not call up more members with critical civilian skills than it needs
- Inform reservists' employers of their rights and responsibilities under the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act.
'This program will make it possible for defense officials ' to know who can be called up for active military duty without jeopardizing the civilian forces responsible for safeguarding our country,' Chu said.
The program requires all Guard and Reserve members to list on the database their employment status, their employer's name and mailing address, civilian job title and number of years in their current civilian occupation, Chu said.
