IRS awards task order for CADE modifications

The Internal Revenue Service awarded a $27 million task order to Computer Sciences Corp. to modify the Customer Account Data Engine IT component to handle new tax laws.

CADE is the centerpiece of the agency's new IT system that will replace its taxpayer records master file containing all individual taxpayer account records. The new system's first release, which supports 1040EZ tax filers, is scheduled for delivery in September.

The contract to modernize outdated IT systems at IRS is worth an estimated $5 billion to $7 billion.

CSC, the El Segundo, Calif., systems integrator, received the contract in 1998 but has come under fire for missing deadlines and accumulating huge cost overruns.
