CIO Council crafting reusable-components paper

The CIO Council's Enterprise Architecture Committee is finalizing a reusable-components white paper that will give agencies a strategy on how to more easily share software.

Kim Nelson, the co-chairwoman of the committee, said the Office of Management and Budget is reviewing the paper. After OMB's analysis, the CIO Council executive committee will complete the paper and send it to agencies.

'The white paper will help us develop a registry to keep track of the components so agencies can share them,' Nelson said.

The white paper will advance OMB's component registry, Core.gov.

The council is discussing what technology to use for the registry and what information needs to be included with the components, she said.

Nelson also said OMB and the CIO Council created the Chief Architects Forum, which held its first meeting recently. The forum will let chief architects address specific strategic, management and operation enterprise architecture challenges, she said.

'From this grass-roots group, we have heard chief architects say that their greatest challenge is educating their own senior officials that EA is not just an IT concept but a strategic management planning tool that positions agency leaderships to manage the complexity of programs and the delivery of their services,' Nelson said.
