Canon CanoScan LiDE 35

The CanoScan LiDE 35 is the new entry-level model in the LiDE scanner series from Canon USA Inc. of Lake Success, N.Y. The lightweight, compact, inexpensive flatbed scanner improves on its predecessor, the LiDE 30, by adding a USB 2.0 port and a button for scanning documents directly to an Adobe PDF file.

LiDE stands for LED InDirect Exposure. Basically, LiDE scanners use a new type of cartridge system consisting of a three-color (RGB) LED as its light source. The LED is significantly smaller and lighter than fluorescent lamps used in many conventional scanners.

An additional benefit to using LEDs is that they are very energy efficient, so they don't require an independent AC power source. The 35 can run off the power from a PC via the USB port. For mobile users, one cord fewer is always a bonus.

The problem with this system, I found, is that it produces only adequate results. Text came out fine, but color photos were not extraordinarily crisp or clear, which a scanner that boasts 1,200-by-2,400-dpi resolution and 48-bit color depth should be able to accomplish.

In addition, the included software was a little skimpy on features. This is understandable, since the LiDE series was designed for quick, on-the-go scanning and image manipulation. But I would have liked a little more versatility in my scans.

Then again, I have always opted for more features over lighter weight. I'm a strong guy with a Boy Scout mentality, so I would rather have things I don't need than risk being without something at a critical moment.

So that aside, the CanoScan LiDE 35 is a very good scanner for its intended user, a mobile professional who needs lightweight on-the-spot scanning. At 3.7 pounds, you will be hard-pressed to find a more portable flatbed scanner with the capabilities of this Canon.
