GCN launches news service for handhelds

Daily and topical news stories from GCN.com and Government Computer News can now be downloaded onto personal digital assistants through a new AvantGo channel launched this month.

In addition to breaking news, the channel includes coverage from homeland security, Defense IT, mobile and wireless, management and security sections.

'GCN on AvantGo offers readers a way to keep up with the latest news when they are away from their desks,' said Alec Dann, senior vice president of Internet publishing at PostNewsweek Tech Media, parent of GCN and Washington Technology.

'Over the last year, GCN has become a daily news publication on the Web and by e-mail. Adding news for Palm OS and Pocket PC users was the next logical step,' Dann said.

The service is free, and material is updated throughout the business day.

AvantGo, a leading mobile Internet service, has more than 10 million registered subscribers around the world. Each day, it delivers more than 1 million synchronizations.

For information about loading the channel, go to GCN.com and enter 280 in the GCN.com/box, or visit www.gcn.com/publisher_services/avantgo.html.
