By the numbers

Hear the pitter-patter of little feet on their way back to school? The country has 73.2 million residents enrolled in schools, from nursery schools to colleges, according to the Census Bureau. About 25 percent of residents over age 3 are students. This year, 2.4 million of them will receive college degrees, according to the bureau, which reports that there are 4,084 postsecondary institutions granting degrees. Younger students will have access to about 13.6 million computers in the nation's 111,000 elementary and secondary schools. That's about one computer for every four students. About 80 percent of children ages 6 to 17 use a computer at school, while two-thirds have access to one at home.
