Military helps troops and families keep in touch with new Web apps

Several military agencies are using Web technology to track everything from troops to readiness.

The Army's Second Infantry Division in Korea is using technology built by DefenseWeb Technologies Inc. of San Diego to design a Web site that lets troops communicate with family members around the globe.

The Army created a virtual Family Readiness Group system for troops and their families, prompted by the redeployment of service members from Korea to serve indefinitely in Iraq.

'Their families were not ... here in Korea for us to conduct group information briefings or individual meetings,' said Col. Thomas J. DeVine, commander of the 2nd Aviation Brigade.

'We immediately recognized the need to develop a tool to provide information and services to a worldwide audience,' DeVine added.

In addition to the Army Web site, 80 active-duty bases that make up the Air Force Family Support Center are using Web technology to give center program managers a single system to measure, track and improve family readiness and retention.

The Family Integrated Results and Statistical Tracking system, built by DefenseWeb, tracks specific programs and services at family support centers.

With deployments on the rise, family readiness takes on added importance in the military. Air Force officials cite the need to help service members and their families prepare for deployments as the impetus behind FIRST.

DefenseWeb built the application using its Xtendable Server.
