A picture is worth a thousand words, but which ones? The federal government offers many useful online repositories of pictures. The space program presents a stunning array on its Great Images in NASA site, at grin.hq.nasa.gov/index.

The Agriculture Department holds collections of images ranging from forest fire fighting to farm animals and rural family life in the 1930s, available at the Agricultural Research Service's Image Gallery via www.usda.gov. See the few, the proud and the photographed at the Marine Corps' Image Archive via www.usmc.mil. If that's not enough already, check the National Archives and Records Administration's photographs and graphic works collections. NARA holds about 17 million images in its collections, which researchers can search via archives.gov. Get the picture?
