What some federal IT security contracts look like



Education Department

Education has a $2.5 million contract with ICS Corp. of Frederick, Md., through February 2006 for:

'Certification and accreditation of major systems

'Scanning IT systems, analyzing results and working with Education staff to identify vulnerabilities

'Helping to write and review security documentation.



Science Applications International Corp. holds a large contract for Education's IT operations. The deal, which is four years old and valued at $30 million a year, also provides:

'Staff for a security operations team 

'Intrusion detection and incident handling.



Transportation Department

Transportation receives on-site IT security services from SAIC, Titan Corp. of San Diego and Indus International Corp. of Atlanta. The contracts are about five years each and have been staggered from 2000 through the present. Total value to date has been about $6 million. The vendors perform services including: 

'Certification and accreditation

'Incident response

'Intrusion detection monitoring

'Program management assurance.





Veterans Affairs Department

Vast LLC, a consortium of small companies led by SecureInfo Corp. of San Antonio, Computer Sciences Corp. and SAIC, has a 10-year deal with the department valued at $103 million. The VA Security Team provides:

'Incident detection and response

'Network incident forensics

'Training for VA staff in forensics.
