Godwin to be direct-reporting manager for NMCI

The Navy's assistant secretary for research, development and acquisition has named Rear Adm. James Godwin the direct-reporting program manager for the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet.

Under the new structure, Godwin will work with the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command and the Marine Corps Systems Command to "propose appropriate restructuring" of the two current NMCI program offices, according to the memo signed May 6 by assistant secretary John J. Young Jr.

Godwin, formerly the NMCI director, will work with the program executive
officer for IT to review programs and propose realignments of initiatives such as server consolidation and legacy network reduction for systems that touch NMCI.

The Navy's deputy assistant secretary for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence and space will coordinate the discussions, Young said. The move is designed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Navy and Marine Corps business IT.

The memo gives Godwin 30 days to submit a plan of action with milestones, a status implementation and a charter for the new DRPM organizational structure.

NMCI will link about 411,000 sailors and Marines at 300 shore sites via a common voice, video and data portal.
