Ops and security get together

This is a tale of two approaches to the convergence of IT security and IT management. One day, folks from Altiris Inc. of Lindon, Utah, stopped by to discuss the company's new Altiris Security Suite, which should integrate nicely with its IT lifecycle management programs. With Security Suite's ability, among other things, to detect and remediate vulnerabilities, assess security postures against government- and industry-standard policies, and even quarantine noncompliant devices, agencies may be able to get all their IT management and security applications from one source. After all, Altiris has long offered its Client and Server Management suites for inventorying IT assets, provisioning software and deploying patches.

The next day, GCN got a visit from StillSecure Inc. of Louisville, Colo., which develops vulnerability management, endpoint security compliance and intrusion detection/prevention software.

Extension of the company's Enterprise Integration Framework is a key part of its latest software upgrades, StillSecure VAM 5.3, Safe Access 3.5 and Border Guard 4.5. Now agencies can tie StillSecure's products'such as VAM and Safe Access'into existing IT management systems to trigger trouble tickets.

Mitchell Ashley, StillSecure's chief technology officer, said his company's approach'basically leaving IT management to other software products'makes sense because many organizations already have such software in place. Matt French, Altiris' director of product marketing, said adding security technology (which the company acquired from Pedestal Software Inc.) is a natural evolution for an IT management company. Time will tell.
