LG Electronics External DVD Burner

A lot of ultraportable notebook PCs these days don't come with optical drives, though you can normally attach them if the device is plugged into a docking bay. And even some full-size notebooks and desktop PCs have only standard CD or DVD drives.

The GSA-5163D 16X External DVD Burner from LG Electronics Inc. of Englewood Cliffs, N.J., is a perfect companion in an imperfect storage world. The drive can connect to systems using fast USB 2.0 or lightning-fast Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 1394 ports.

We tested the burner using a variety of media, from CD-Rs and DVDs to DVDs specifically designed for video media. The drive never skipped or sputtered, even when performing a task such as watching a movie, where a skip would be very obvious.

One really nice feature is that, in addition to supporting every format of both DVD and CDR, it can also do something no other drive we have tested can: burn 8.5G DVD+R double-layer disks.

The DVD+R double-layer format is the Holy Grail for the user who needs a lot of storage space. You can put your entire collection of almost anything onto one disk. And at around $4 a piece for the media, this is a much cheaper alternative to adding new hard disks.

Our only real complaint is that the burner is not exactly a lightweight. At 6.4 by 9.6 by 2.1 inches, it is a little large. It also weighs 3.4 pounds, which is about the weight of an ultraportable laptop.

Still, it performs a valuable function and can work alongside of almost any Windows system with a USB or firewire port. And the ability to burn double-layer 8.5G DVDs really puts it in a class by itself.
