Navy-Marine Corps Intranet now accessible via laptop

The Navy recently deployed a broadband solution to enable users to log onto the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet portal from their laptop computers.

EDS Corp., prime contractor on NMCI, began a phased rollout of a Broadband Unclassified Remote Access Solution (BuRAS) to the Navy department's 60,000 NMCI laptop users. Users will be able to remotely connect to the NMCI network through high-speed Internet connections.

'The BuRAS application now being deployed is our response to clear customer feedback. It will provide a secure, solid foundation for a mobile and flexible workforce,' said Mike Koehler, EDS enterprise client executive.

The rollout is expected to be completed in December, officials said.

NMCI is a consolidated voice, video and data network that will link 360,000 sailors and Marines at roughly 300 sites to the integrated portal.
