Konica Minolta Magicolor 2400W

Until now, if you wanted a personal or small-workgroup printer, you pretty much had to settle for an ink-jet model or a black-and-white laser printer.

The Magicolor 2400W printer from Konica Mi- nolta Printing So- lutions U.S.A. Inc. may change all that. The 2400W is a color laser printer that can be had for about $400. It prints up to 20 pages per minute for straight text documents and five per minute for color images, including photographs. While that's a little on the slow side for a huge network, it is an acceptable speed for workgroups of 10 people or fewer who just need ordinary printing jobs.

The 2400W is rated to a 35,000-page-per-month duty cycle, so it can certainly handle small groups that need to share it. And the printer's high-capacity toner cartridges last for 4,500 prints, making them cheaper to use in the long run than ink-jet cartridges, which have to be replaced after 300 or so prints.

By default, the connection to the 2400W is by USB 2.0, meaning you can just plug it into most PCs and it will be ready to go. This and its small footprint of 16.9 inches by 13.4 inches make it a perfect personal printer. An optional network card is available if you need to share it.

The tray will hold 200 sheets of paper, which are printed in a face-down configuration.

We tested the output of the 2400W in the GCN Lab by printing several images with known color values. The images printed quickly and were accurate. Only when we sent the printer a 30-page document packed with images did its 32M internal memory start to max out. In that case, the images still printed but took several minutes to complete.
