California city, CompuDyne in public safety IT pact

Police officers in Burbank, Calif., will be spending more time fighting crime and less time filling out paperwork because of a new public safety IT system the city has contracted with CompuDyne Corp.

Terms of the $1.5 million project call for CompuDyne Public Safety and Justice Inc. of Annapolis, Md., to provide software and services for a new public safety system for the Burbank Police Department. The comprehensive system includes new computer-aided dispatch, records management and field reporting systems to help the department serve Burbank's 100,000 residents.

The computer-aided dispatch system will operate on Microsoft Windows workstations, providing server-independent processing of all critical dispatch functions and a reliable configuration that will continue to operate even if other components fail.

The new records management system will consolidate and automate records processing and criminal investigations for the police department. It also will include a mobile communications component, with automated field report writing capabilities to be installed in 30 police vehicles.

The new field report writing system, which will allow officers to enter and access their accident and case reports from the field, will automate the department's paper reporting process.
