Defense orders five high-performance Linux clusters


The Defense Department's High Performance Computing Modernization Program has purchased five computer clusters from Linux Networx of Salt Lake City.


The Army Research Laboratory's Major Shared Resource Center (ARL MSRC) will get four of the clusters, which the company will install this summer. The Army's Dugway Proving Ground in Utah will also receive a cluster as part of the deal.


ARL will offer use of these clusters to other military services for computing jobs too large to be done in-house.


Army renews deal with Raytheon for missile support


The Army Aviation and Missile Command has awarded a $65 million contract renewal to Raytheon Co. for engineering and technical services supporting the Patriot Air and Missile Defense program.


Under the contract, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems will provide system and software engineering, hardware engineering, system testing, quality assurance, configuration management, logistic support and program management. The work includes the first phase of the Combined Aggregate Program.


Army Program Executive Office takes control of LogMod


The Army's Program Executive Office for Enterprise Information Systems this month is taking over management of a high-profile Army logistics system. PEO EIS inherits the Wholesale Logistics Modernization program, commonly called LogMod, from the Army Materiel Command. Kevin Carroll, program executive officer, said senior Army officials decided his office was a better fit to move the troubled program forward.


The Army currently has a strategic pause on LogMod, which has struggled with delays and cost overruns, Carroll said.
