DOD's work in health IT among projects recognized at FOSE

The federal government plans on spending more than $5 billion on health IT in 2006, and the Defense Department is among the leading agencies using the technology.

So it came as no surprise that two of its projects were honored as Showcase of Excellence award winners from the Federal Leadership Councils today at the FOSE trade show in Washington, sponsored by PostNewsweek Tech Media, the parent company of Government Computer News.

The Federal Leadership Councils recognize projects in the Defense Department, Homeland Security and Enterprise pavilions for their innovation and impact on the federal government.

DOD's Clinical IT Program Office Electronic Health Record and the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center's Battlefield Medical Information System-Tactical use IT to improve health care for service men and women, and veterans.

The EHR program in the Enterprise Pavilion supports more than 9 million beneficiaries worldwide with electronic health records. It includes a data repository that currently contains more than 4.7 million completed patient encounters and clinical data on 6.2 million patients.

BMIST, in the DOD pavilion, provides military medics with a one-stop device for treating and diagnosing wounded soldiers, and storing and transmitting that information wirelessly to Army base medical facilities. An electronic dog tag stores soldiers' records so first responders can review a patient's medical history, even if that patient is unconscious.

Other winners included:

DOD Pavilion: J-9 Wireless LAN Team U.S. Joint Forces Command, which built a secure wireless architecture that is serving as a model to others within government

Enterprise Pavilion: Core.gov from GSA, which provides a collaborative Web site for agencies to find and reuse system components

Homeland Security Pavilion: FirstGov.gov from the General Services Administration, which offers Internet, e-mail, phone, fax or print government information. FirstGov recently expanded its search engine's capabilities and is offering more services through its National Contact Center.
