DHS policy official Dezenski departs

The exodus of appointees from the Homeland Security Department continued Friday, with the news that it was Elaine Dezenski's last day.

Dezenski, acting assistant secretary for policy development, has been with DHS since its inception. She was serving in the new Transportation Security Administration, which was moved to DHS upon its creation in the spring of 2003.

Dezenski was appointed deputy assistant secretary for policy and planning within the Border and Transportation Security Directorate. When DHS secretary Michael Chertoff reorganized the department in 2005, BTS was disbanded, but a departmentwide policy office was created and Dezenski moved there, a DHS spokesman said.

During her tenure, Dezenski played a role in developing DHS policies for enforcing border protections and ensuring the safety of cargo entering U.S. ports.

Sen. Susan Collins, chairwoman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, praised Dezenski's efforts over the past three and a half years.

'From her work helping create [TSA] to her current role' her leadership has been instrumental in shaping the department's principal initiatives,' Collins said in a statement. 'Elaine's tireless emphasis on cargo and supply chain security has ensured that international trade enriches without unduly endangering us. Her work on the Visa Waiver Program and other travel initiatives has helped to ensure that our borders are strong yet remain welcoming to legitimate travelers.'
