The nonprofit Open Source Development Labs
has started a project to fuse the two dominant Linux desktop graphical user interfaces, the staid but consistent KDE
and the more adventurous but buggier Gnome.
The Portland Project will develop a set of common application programming interfaces that developers can use to write applications that will work in both environments.
